About Me

It is a pleasure to meet you, my name is Glen Philbrick , I'm married with a family, and I'm a watercolour artist living in Wellington, New Zealand.

I am an International Brand Ambassador for RockWell Art Supplies:

I am also a Manager for the International Watercolour Society New Zealand Branch:

I work full-time as a Registered Nurse and paint weeknights. I have a Masters of Nursing Degree and work in Patient Safety.

I became an artist in 2021, after a work colleague encouraged me to paint, and to  follow in my father's footsteps, my late father being a retired picture framer and artist. My work colleague's conversation was inspiring to say the least.

My work colleague then invited me to his studio, and I painted my first watercolour. He continued to encourage me to paint, and I'm always eternally grateful I heeded upon his advice.

Once I started painting, I realised I needed tuition, so I did a Wild Watercolour Course through Dolores Phelps, as I had fallen in love with her abstract paintings and forest scenes. After completing her course, Dolores continues to mentor my practice, while I continue to paint semi abstract and serene landscapes. Subsequently, always learning and developing my watercolour practice.

I paint intuitively, letting the water guide the pigment. I use gravity (via a tilting board) moving the water and pigment on the paper, and I use transparent pigments when painting, striving for luminous and fresh paintings. I convey meanings behind my paintings, which express how spiritually connected I am with the beautiful landscapes throughout New Zealand.

I love landscape photography and use my photos as a source of inspiration ( I freely permit you to use any of my photos as you see fit).

The below photo of mine is taken from a plane and captures the magnificent Southern Alps of New Zealand.

Next Steps

I am inspired by many local artists here in New Zealand, and international artists. It is my hope my works can be displayed through a combination of face to face and online exhibitions.
